The thing that makes a boiler service worth paying for is not the cleaning. It is the set of numbers taken while the appliance is running, and the comparison of those numbers against what the manufacturer says the appliance should produce. A visit that produces no readings has told you almost nothing, however tidy the boiler looks afterwards.

A service is a set of measurements, not a look and a sticker

The central instrument is a flue gas analyser. It samples what comes out of the flue while the appliance runs, and reports the ratio of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide along with the oxygen content and the flue temperature. That ratio is the honest picture of how completely the gas is burning. A figure drifting outside the manufacturer's stated window means the combustion is wrong, and it means it before anything obvious has happened in the house.

Alongside the analyser reading, the working gas pressure is checked at the appliance with the burner running, and on many installations the gas rate is timed at the meter to confirm the appliance is drawing what it should. These readings interact. A boiler that appears to burn poorly may in fact be starved by an undersized or partially obstructed supply, and treating the appliance instead of the supply wastes a visit. The point of measuring is to separate those cases rather than guess between them.

The parts that fail quietly

Several components degrade slowly enough that nothing feels wrong until the day it stops. The expansion vessel is the clearest example. It holds a cushion of air behind a flexible membrane so the water has somewhere to go as it heats. That charge leaks away over years, and once it has gone the pressure gauge starts climbing hard when the heating runs and dropping back when it cools. Most people meet this as a boiler that keeps needing topping up, and treat the symptom for a season before the cause is found.

The condensate trap is another. A condensing appliance produces mildly acidic water that has to drain away, and the trap that stops flue gases coming back through it slowly silts up. Left long enough it blocks, the appliance detects the fault and shuts down, and the fault presents in the middle of the first genuinely cold week rather than in July. Cleaning it is a routine part of a service and takes minutes; meeting it as an emergency does not.

What you should be left holding afterwards

Ask for the readings, not just the outcome. A record that lists the actual figures gives you something to compare against next year, and year-on-year drift is far more informative than a single set of numbers in isolation. If the combustion figures have moved noticeably in twelve months, that is worth knowing while the appliance is still working normally.

It is also worth asking what was not done and why. Some checks depend on access: a flue that runs through a boxed-in ceiling void cannot be inspected along its length without inspection hatches, and an engineer who tells you that plainly is being straight with you. A record that quietly implies everything was verified when part of it was unreachable is worth less than an honest note of the limitation.

Does my boiler still need servicing if nothing seems wrong with it?

That is precisely when a service is most useful, because most of what it checks is invisible from inside the house. Combustion quality, flue integrity and the expansion vessel charge all degrade without changing anything you would notice, and a boiler can be running inefficiently or unsafely while heating the house perfectly well. There is also a practical point: most manufacturer warranties require annual servicing by a suitably qualified engineer, and a gap in that record can matter later if a major component fails while the appliance is still within its warranty period.

Is a service the same thing as a gas safety check?

No, though they overlap and are often carried out on the same visit. A safety check establishes that the appliance is safe to use: it looks at combustion, flue, ventilation and the condition of the installation. A service goes further and includes the maintenance work the manufacturer specifies for that model, which typically means stripping and cleaning components, checking seals and inspecting parts that a safety check would only assess from the outside. If you specifically want the manufacturer's service schedule carried out, say so when booking, because the two jobs are priced and timed differently.

Before the visit, find your boiler's make and model from the panel or the manual, note the pressure the gauge shows when the system is cold, and write down whether you have had to repressurise it in the last year and how often.
