Run it properly for an hour
Turn the heating on and set the thermostat well above room temperature so the system genuinely calls for heat, then leave it running for a full hour. A five-minute test proves very little, because most informative faults only appear once everything is up to temperature.
Then walk the house and touch every radiator, top and bottom, including rooms nobody uses. You are looking for three things: radiators that stay cold, radiators cold in one part only, and radiators that get hot much faster than the rest.

Check the thermostatic valve heads turn while you are there. Pins seize over a still summer, and a seized head leaves a radiator permanently cold or permanently hot whatever the number on the top says.

What a still summer does
Several classic autumn faults are caused by nothing more than months of inactivity, which is precisely why testing early finds them cheaply.
Thermostatic valve pins seize in position. Pumps that have not turned since spring occasionally decline to start. Diverter valves stick, which shows up as hot water but no heating, or heating that comes on whenever a hot tap runs. Air collects at the high points and needs bleeding before anything performs properly.
Almost all of these are small jobs in early autumn and expensive nuisances in December. A seized valve pin can often be freed rather than replaced if it is caught before somebody forces the head.
It is also the sensible moment for anything you already know needs doing: a radiator you have been meaning to change, a thermostat that has never worked properly, or pipework that has been noisy for a year.
Read the pressure gauge and listen
The pressure gauge is the best diagnostic instrument in the house and almost nobody looks at it. Note what it reads when the system is cold, and again after an hour of running. Some rise when hot is normal.
A steady fall over days or weeks is not. A sealed system should hold its pressure for months, so if you are topping up regularly, water is leaving somewhere. Each refill also introduces fresh oxygenated water, which accelerates corrosion inside the radiators and the boiler.
Noise is the other free signal. Kettling, ticking and banging pipework all point at restricted circulation and deposits rather than anything exotic, and a pump that has become noticeably noisier is telling you about its remaining life.
Those symptoms are also exactly what a service is looking for: a boiler cutting out or losing pressure, unusual noises, leaks or dripping, and radiators not heating evenly after the boiler starts.
- Note the pressure cold, hot, and again a week later.
- A steady fall means a leak, not a topping-up habit.
- Kettling and banging point at deposits and restricted flow.
- A newly noisy pump is a warning worth acting on.
Where to stop and call
Bleeding a radiator that is cold at the top is a reasonable thing to do yourself, and so is working a thermostatic head fully open and closed a few times to free a stuck pin.
Beyond that, the sensible line is anything involving the appliance, the gas, the pressure vessel, or a system that will not hold its pressure. Those need somebody qualified, and continuing to top up a leaking system while you decide is actively making the internal condition worse.
Booking early has a practical advantage beyond the diary. A fault found in mild weather can be repaired on a normal appointment with the right part ordered; the same fault in December is an emergency with whatever is on the van.
